Application Story
Cabot Circus: Signing off with VHB. |

The developers of Bristol’s new shopping Mall in Broadmead approached Woodhøuse UK plc (designers and manufacturers of street lighting and furniture) regarding proposed internal signage. A criterion set was that the shoppers’ car park had to have clear, strategically placed directional signs to ensure traffic flow and ease of use. The most crucial requirement was for no viewable fixings to be seen to reflect the clean looking designs of this multi-million pound development.

| FineCal was contacted by Woodhøuse to see if this crucial stipulation could be met and to explore the possibility of utilising adhesive tape. Following site meetings and examination of the structure and finish, 3M’s VHB was proposed as the most likely candidate due to high level in performance especially on mixed surfaces and crucially, longevity that the product would provide. In addition due to contract deadlines that had been imposed, speed was of the essence and again VHB would be able to fulfil this need. | |

Site testing was undertaken to identify which of the VHB range would suit and also the best configuration of how the tape should be applied to the sign backs The total number of signs was over 1100 which consisted of a large variety of different sizes and weights. Also due to the nature of the stonework, a specialist 3M primer was advised upon to act as a paint seal.

Once completed FineCal with the assistance of 3M technical established what would be the best practice for applying the signs and an on-site training day for Woodhøuse staff was organised. Once the work had started, FineCal remained on hand and visited the operation on a regular basis.
Due to the success of VHB so far, the developers asked for more signs to be done in other mall areas and due to the time constraints, special tape deliveries were organised to the factory so that preparatory work could be processed before being shipped down to Bristol. |

As the deadline for Cabot Circus’ opening approached, a problem arose with the information office sited for the main concourse. The original plan was for it to have plain walls but was shelved because the office would look too dull. So laminated wood was chosen instead; but with only less than a week how could this be accomplished. By now the word about 3M’s tape had gone around and FineCal became involved again and carried out trials. This proved to be the winner and training was carried out during the same night showing the carpenter team how best to apply it before final fixing. |

In the end, all was successful and Cabot Circus with the largest shoppers’ car park in Western Europe was opened on time.
David Townsend, Production Director of Woodhøuse, stated “although we are used to dealing with big projects from railway stations to bus shelters in airports, this was a job with a difference. I was sceptical about not being able to use mechanical fastenings and having to rely on tape, but I was duly surprised as to just how strong VHB is. We will certainly be utilising this and other 3M products too from FineCal in the future.” And true to their word, they have! |
