Abrasive Backings:-Paper Backings:
These vary according to applications. A, C, D, E and F weight papers are generally used (A=Course grade to F= Finest grade). C and D weight papers can be used for both hand and machine applications. Particularly useful is Wet or Dry abrasives. These waterproof papers contain resin combinations to withstand the slurry. A favourite in automotive trades.
Cloth Backings:
Based on synthetic fibre instead of cotton, they are made in:-
- J weights – flexible and suitable for contour abrading but are act stiffly where conformity is limited.
- Y weights - more heavy duty and tend to have coarser grades and therefore suited for tough applications.
Film Backings:
Incorporated resistant films that support fine grit layers. These give guaranteed quality and finish.
Aluminum Oxide:
This is easy to use by hand and allows better access to contours and moulded surfaces due to its flexibility. Good for stock removal and polishing.
Silicone Carbide:
This gives a high performance and is fast-cutting at a constant level. and able to resist loading and therefore lengthen product life. Suitable for non-ferrous metals, bronze, titanium, stainless steel, lacquers, glass and plastics.
Garnet:
Based on semi precious stones, the nature of the mineral gives the right shaped surface for general working especially on wood.
Zirconia:
With self-sharpening crystalline structures, Zirconia is a moltened mixture of aluminium and zirconium oxide. When used, the edges break down revealing fresh sharpened sides that provide consistent abrasive qualities. Generates deep and wide scratch patterns and excellent for heavy stock removal in both wood and metal. |
