Noise and the damage it can do

If you areexposed to noise, whether at high levels instantaneously or medium to lowlevels with extended exposure, you may be at risk of damage to hearing. Thiscan lead to partial and complete hearing loss or tinnitus, a constant ringingor buzzing-like sound.

Hearing noise in the workplace over 120 decibels, even if only for a second, will likely result in instant damage. Noise can also be harmful at lower levels when exposure is prolonged. For example, at 10 Db there is no risk at any time, so there is no maximum exposure time – this would be the equivalent to rustling leaves.

It’simportant to take note of when noise can become a risk to avoid Noise-InducedHearing Loss (NIHL) as it is not always immediately noticeable, the damage canbe temporary or permanent and may affecting hearing in the future.

Employers and their legal duties

By law, employers have a responsibility to take measures in reducing risk of damage toemployees’ hearing, this is under the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.At 80 decibels, employers must assess the risk the noise may have and if itreaches 85 decibels, they must take steps to reduce risk of damage. This is thethreshold at which hearing protection is recommended. Risk reduction includesproviding hearing protection and hearing protection zones.

How to reduce the risk

  • Startby assessing the risk to employees, for more information on this visit: http://www.hse.gov.uk/noise/risks.htm
  • Eliminateor reduce the noise itself where possible
  • If the exposure is not reduced enough and still poses a risk, employees should beprovided with hearing protection suitable for the work they are carrying out
  • Ensurethat legal limits are not exceeded
  • Offerinformation, instruction and training programmes
  • Ifthere is a risk to health, carry out health surveillance
